Taiwan Asks Wto Members to Improve Communications Rules

TAIPEI, Oct. 17 Asia Pulse - Taiwan has submitted to the World Trade Organization (WTO) a proposal for member economies to streamline their legal systems regarding the communications service sector, officials said Friday.

The proposal, made last month by the Directorate General of Telecommunications under the ROC Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), aims to address a situation where some WTO members have employed vague regulations and laws governing communications services, including the issuance of certifications, trade on the Internet, and foreign investments.

The proposal could liberalize global communications services trade under the WTO framework and is supported by several WTO members, including the United States and Norway, MOTC officials said.

They added that if the proposal is adopted, all WTO members will be obliged to follow it.
