New Commodity Proposal by African Group
6 June, 2006
Carin Smaller
African Trade Ministers in their last Ministerial meeting emphasized the 'need to establish concrete modalities for addressing commodity price volatility.' The African Group proposes mechanisms to address the issue of commodity prices in the negotiations. They call for the consideration of international commodity agreements to manage the oversupply of agricultural commodities on world markets. This issue has been raised several times during the Doha Round by 6 African countries. It is now being submitted on behalf of the entire African Group highlighting its growing importance and the need for this issue to be included in the modalities on agriculture.
