EU impact assessment of Doha Round
17 May, 2006
War on Want
Below is a link to the EU's own impact assessment of the Doha Round. This is a consultation draft of the final report, and will be presented at a public meeting of the European Commission on 16 June. The analysis finds that:
- many of the world's poorest economies will lose out from the Round, "including parts of South Asia and much of Sub-Saharan Africa"
- the trade reforms may also hamper development in vulnerable countries
- some poor countries "may experience significant adverse social and environmental impacts" as a result of tariff revenue loss and thus contraction of key public service budgets
- "adverse effects on climate change and global biodiversity are expected"
